A lost cardboard collector in Sanssouci Park, the English Tower in Sizilianischer Garten, a porteño public road in front of the Palace. Lost memories of mi Buenos Aires querido...
I explore the concept of memory, displacement and identity through a temporary intervention. Contrasting the social, environmental and phenomenological characteristics of Potsdam, Germany and Buenos Aires, Argentina, I give shape to the sensation of strangeness that take over me as an immigrant.
In a similar manner to garden gnomes, small sugar figures stand in landmarks of Potsdam. These are selected representations of Buenos Aires' urban life: a cardboard collector making a living out of trash, the English Tower of the Central Station that reminds porteños of the european dream, a typical road sign that became a souvenir. As white ghostly figures, they reconstruct a city I left and yearn. Their material will, however, allow them to blend with the surroundings with a simple rain falling over them.
How much of the old me is persistant through this journey? What am I giving up to blend here? Like the german saying goes, we are not made of sugar, but some parts might be.
Work in progress...
